Holiday weight gain doesn’t have to happen. Here’s how to avoid overeating during the holiday season. Gaining weight over the holidays is what you might call a “no-brainer.” When you’re facing a month-long holiday season of non-stop parties, family get-togethers and once-a-year holiday foods, it’s easy to think, “who wouldn’t gain a few extra pounds?” Holiday weight gain doesn’t have to happen, but a lot of people just assume that it will. And that kind of thinking could get you into a lot of trouble. If you’re convinced that holiday weight gain is inevitable, you’re probably not going to do much to prevent it. Why It’s So Easy to Gain Weight Over the Holidays That’s not to say that maintaining your weight over the holidays is easy – it’s a huge challenge to keep your eating under control during the holiday season. When you’re facing so many situations (and for so long) that entice you to eat more than you should, your willpower is being tested nearly nonstop. Look at it this way: in your daily life, you can probably name a situation or two that you know will trigger you to overeat. Maybe you eat too much when you’re stressed, or you overdo it on the weekends. And when you’ve only got one or two triggers to manage, you can probably do that pretty well most of the year. But when the holidays come around, it’s not just one or two things that can trigger you to overeat. In fact, if I were to list (as I’m about to do) some of the most common overeating triggers, it’s as if every single one of them is coming at you from all sides during the holidays. And, it goes on for weeks. When you look at it that way, it’s amazing we don’t gain more weight than we do over the holidays. We Don’t Gain That Much Over the Holidays (But We Don’t Lose It, Either) In fact, according to a widely cited study1, the average American only gains about 1 pound (about half a kilo) during the (roughly) 6-week holiday season that stretches from the end of November through the first of the New Year. Now the bad news: The same study also noted that those who start the season with extra weight do have larger weight gains over the holidays – closer to 5 pounds (2.3 kg). And, no matter how much weight you gain over the holidays – even if it’s only a pound or so – that weight tends to stay with you. Hang onto that extra pound year after year, and you could have a case of obesity creeping up on you. 12 Reasons Why We Overeat at Holidays •Longer meals can lead to overeating. Holiday meals tend to be more leisurely – we enjoy sitting around the table visiting, without the need to rush. But the longer you sit at the table, the more you’re likely to eat . You absent-mindedly grab another spoonful of potatoes or a second slice of pie. To signal that your meal is over, take your plate into the kitchen, or pop a breath mint in your mouth. •Eating with other people can lead to overeating. When you eat with other people, meals tend to be longer. You might also find yourself influenced by the large portions other people are eating, and give yourself permission to follow suit. Being the first one to plate up sometimes helps – that way, you can serve yourself a reasonable portion without being swayed by the amount of food others are piling onto their plates. •Drinking alcohol can lead to overeating. An alcoholic drink or two can loosen your inhibitions – often bringing on the “what the heck, it’s the holidays!” attitude. Your best defense here is to set a limit of how many drinks you’re planning to have – and stick to it – and alternate alcoholic drinks with calorie-free beverages. •Exposure to a wide variety of foods can lead to overeating. The more variety on your plate, the more you’re likely to eat. That’s because it takes longer for your taste buds to get bored – when every bite is a little different, you just want to keep eating. To handle this, you can either limit the number of choices you allow yourself, or keep your portions very small if you’re going for variety. •Pressure from friends and family can lead to overeating. At no time of the year is the pressure more intense, it seems, than at holidays. Relatives knock themselves out making special holiday dishes, and you run the risk of insulting them if you don’t indulge (or over-indulge). You can gently push back by agreeing to just a small portion, or you can try saying, “I know I’d enjoy this a lot more if I weren’t so full – maybe later.” •Getting out of your usual routine can lead to overeating. One reason people overeat on the weekends is because they’re out of their usual routine – and the holiday season can seem like a weekend that lasts for a month. Even when you have parties and get-togethers to attend, it’s unlikely that every single meal is affected. So, stick to your usual eating routine when you’re not at an event, and make a commitment to stay on track with your exercise, too. •Eating away from home can lead to overeating. You tend to eat more calories when you eat away from home because it’s harder to control portion sizes or ingredients. Holiday meals often involve large portions of rich food, so you need a strategy. Do your best to keep portions of rich food on the small side, and try to load up on any items that won’t break your calorie bank, like vegetables and green salads. Resist the temptation to fill your plate, and use a smaller plate if one is available to help you control portions. •Stress can lead to overeating. Holiday time is fun, but it’s also stressful. If stress is one of your overeating triggers, you’ll want to find other ways to calm down. Try to carve some downtime for yourself so you’re not over-committed, and be sure to set time aside for the best stress-buster of all – exercise. Rather than turning to food when you’re stressed, have a cup of tea, call a friend, take a walk, or meditate for a few minutes instead. •Family style meals can lead to overeating. When serving dishes are placed on the table – as they often are at holiday meals – overeating is encouraged. Second helpings (and thirds…) can happen before you know it. Pass bowls and platters of tempting foods to the opposite end of the table to get them out of your line of sight. •Serving yourself from large containers can lead to overeating. Behavioral psychology research tells us that we serve ourselves more food from large containers than we do from smaller ones. Holiday platters are often gigantic, and food is piled up so high that even if you take an enormous serving, it hardly makes a dent. Keep an image in your head of the portion sizes you know you should eat, and do your best to stick to them. •Eating from a buffet line can lead to overeating. Buffets can be the ‘’perfect storm” of overeating – there’s lots of variety, serving dishes are huge, you can go back as many times as you want, and you have no idea how most of the dishes were prepared. Before you dig in, take a stroll down the length of the buffet line and determine what you’re going to have. Fill up your plate with as many of the lower-calorie items that you can identify, with much smaller portions of the richer fare. If you can, sit with your back to the buffet line. Out of sight, out of mind. •Increased exposure to food can lead to overeating. Ever notice how – at holiday time – there’s food everywhere you go? From goodies in the break room at work, candy canes on the counter at the bank, and gift baskets arriving unexpectedly at your door, you’re exposed to more temptation at this time of the year than any other. While it’s hard to limit your exposure to all these treats, you can change the way you respond when you see them. Rather than letting your impulses get the best of you, stop and ask yourself, “did I plan to eat this?” If you didn’t plan for it, didn’t want it until you saw it, or wouldn’t go out of your way to get it – you probably shouldn’t be eating it. 1Yanovski JA et al. Healthy Snacking

I wanted to share this article with you. I thought it was very well written and informative with great suggestions. There seems to be a big divide between those who think snacking is a good thing and those who think snacking is bad … which baffles me a little bit. I’ve always been solidly in the pro-snacking camp – for reasons I’ll get to in a minute – and I just assumed that most other people felt the same way about healthy snacking. But some of my clients seem almost offended if I suggest that they snack (“Me, snack? Never!). For a long time, I couldn’t make sense of this, and then one day, it struck me. To some, snacking means “eating when you’re not hungry” – which, of course, is “bad”. To others, the question, “do you eat snacks?” is heard as, “do you eat snack foods?” which may explain why they get defensive – it sounds as if I’m accusing them of loading up on unhealthy snack foods like chips, cookies and candy. So here’s my take on snacking: when it’s done right, snacking can be a healthy habit that may help you manage your weight and balance your diet. Five Reasons Why Snacking Can Be a Healthy Habit 1. Smart snacking may prevent you from overeating at meal time. Most of us get hungry about every 3-4 hours. So, if there’s a long stretch between meals, you’re likely to get hungry – which is why a snack would be appropriate. But if you resist the urge to snack and try to “tough it out”, there’s a good chance you’ll just make up for it by overeating at your next meal. 2. Smart snacking can help you reduce your overall calorie intake for the day. Sometimes I have a hard time convincing people that healthy snacking can help them control their total calorie intake for the day – they figure that they’re just going to add snacks (and their calories) right on top of everything they’re already eating. But if a well-planned, healthy snack helps you eat less at mealtimes, then you’ll cut your daily calories overall. 3. Smart snacking can help you to work more healthy foods into your day. This is usually my strongest argument for those who resist snacking (or who skip meals altogether). The more often you eat, the easier it will be to work in your daily servings of healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, and calcium-rich dairy products. 4. Snacks can help you maintain your physical and mental energy. When you eat regular meals and snacks, it can help keep your blood sugar more stable throughout the day – a good defense against between-meal dips in blood sugar that can sap your mental and physical energy. 5. A substantial afternoon snack can help control portions at dinner – which tends to be the largest meal of the day. Lots of people manage to control their eating pretty well during the day, but really cut loose at night and eat a huge dinner. For those folks, a larger afternoon snack – almost a small “second lunch” – makes it much easier to cut back at the evening meal. When Is The Snacking Habit Not Healthy? You might want to take a closer look at your snacking habits if: - You’re eating unhealthy, high calorie foods like sweets, chips, and sodas. Not only can these high calorie snack foods contribute to weight gain, they offer little – if any – nutritional value. - You’re eating for reasons other than hunger. Snacking wisely means that you choose healthy foods to eat in between meals to help control your appetite and meet your nutritional needs. But if you tend to snack when you’re not hungry – maybe you’re bored, stressed, angry or tired – it’s a habit you might want to think about breaking. What Makes a Snack Healthy? One reason snacking has gotten such a bad rap is because so many common ‘snack foods’ are high in fat, sugar, salt and calories. You’ll want to steer clear of those, and instead put together a snack that will provide a mix of low fat protein and healthy carbohydrate. The carbs will get digested first and satisfy your hunger right away, and the protein will give your snack a bit more staying power. Healthy Snack Ideas The protein-carb combo can be put together in almost endless ways. Here are a few snack suggestions: - Protein shake made with nonfat or lowfat milk, protein powder and fruit. You can scale the size down a bit for a ‘snack-size’ shake - Protein snack bars – great to carry with you so you always have a healthy snack on hand - Plain nonfat yogurt, sweetened with a little maple syrup and cinnamon, topped with fruit. - Raw veggies – carrots, cherry tomatoes, peppers – dipped in hummus. - Nonfat latte made with milk or soy milk - Nonfat cottage cheese topped with diced veggies or fresh fruit - Small handful of nuts – almonds, walnuts, pistachios, pecans or soy nuts - Sliced hard-boiled egg on tomato slices with a twist of fresh ground pepper - Edamame soybeans – heated up, drizzle with a little low-sodium soy sauce - Canned tuna mashed with avocado and spread on a few whole grain crackers - Few slices of turkey or smoked salmon wrapped around cucumber sticks What are your favorite snacks? You Are What You Eat

Do you know that the average person that goes out and eats lunch everyday spends an average of $7.17 per meal. This is a meal that consist of additives, fats, very little nutritional value and averages around 1300 calories per meal. On top of all or the lack of nutritional value you will also feel tired and not energized and just feel all out YUCK! Your Diet can be the Fountain of Youth

Have you ever thought about your diet. When you go on an unhealthy diet which suggests that you basically starve yourself by depriving your body of the food that it needs to fuel the energy to burn the fat that it is not a healthy way to lose the weight. However, if you go on a diet plan that has you putting good vitamins and food into your body you will be amazed at the results that you will achieve. First of all your body needs vitamins and food to fuel the energy it takes to burn the fat. Your body also needs exercise. The perfect program that I have found is feeding yourself with healthy good foods and vitamins and not depriving your body of the essential nutrients. I started my diet in April and have been just amazed at the results that I have gotten. I never feel hungry, if anything I have to remind my self to eat. You need to fuel your body every couple of hours to keep the fires burning. My example of an ordinary day is I have a couple of herbal tea and aloe upon waking, then I have a Formula 1 shake for breakfast, there are so many delicious recipes to make with this you will have a hard time choosing which one you will want, then about 10am I have a protein drink (I do this one only because I am working and I don't have time to fix anything else in the morning) but you could have yogurt, hard boiled eggs, veggies, tuna pita pocket, anything that is healthy and has protein. Then at lunch I do cottage cheese and yogurt, or tuna pita pocket, salad with veggies and avocado. Then at 2pm small salad, eggs, tuna, veggies w/hummus, peanut butter, protein shake, again anything protein. Then for dinner we always eat what I call a colorful meal, chicken, port, fish, grain, salad, a lot of color. Color is good. This has been the easiest diet I have ever been on and I plan on staying this way even when I am done loosing the last 5 lbs. It has taught me the importance of nutrition and exercise.
